What is the Elo rating system?

The Elo rating system, devised by physicist Arpad Elo, measures the relative strength of chess players. After each FIDE-rated game, your rating is adjusted based on the result and your opponent's rating. A win against a higher-rated player adds more points; a loss to a lower-rated player costs more. The rating converges toward a stable value that reflects your true playing strength.

How many players are FIDE-rated?

The June 2026 FIDE list includes 553,711 classical-rated, 454,968 rapid-rated and 302,938 blitz-rated players across more than 180 federations. A single player can hold all three ratings independently.

What is a good chess Elo rating?

The median classical FIDE rating is around 1715 — half of all rated players sit below this mark. Reaching 2000 puts you in the top 13%, and 2200 in the top 4%. Only a few dozen players in the world hold a rating above 2700.

Why does my percentile differ between classical, rapid, and blitz?

The three formats use separate rating pools and are updated independently. Rapid and blitz pools are also smaller, and the distribution of ratings differs slightly. As of June 2026: classical 553,711 players, rapid 454,968 players, blitz 302,938 players.

What is the minimum FIDE rating?

Since the 2024 revision of FIDE rating regulations, the minimum published rating is 1400. All players who receive an initial rating are assigned at least 1400, replacing the former system where provisional ratings could appear below that threshold. Source: FIDE Handbook B.02 (2024).

How often is the FIDE rating list updated?

FIDE publishes the classical rating list monthly. Rapid and blitz lists are also updated monthly. This tool uses a snapshot from the June 2026 list and will be refreshed periodically.

Does this tool use my actual FIDE profile?

No — this tool simply takes any Elo you enter and locates it in the June 2026 FIDE distribution. It does not connect to any external API or look up your profile.
