How many people live around you?

People are distributed very unevenly across the planet.

A radius of 100 km around Paris contains tens of millions of people, while the same radius in northern Canada may contain only a few thousand.

This tool estimates how many people live within a chosen distance of any location on Earth using high-resolution population data.

Population within 10 km, 50 km and 100 km

A small radius shows your immediate local area.

Larger radii reveal the size of the surrounding metropolitan region.

For example:

  • 10 km corresponds roughly to a city district
  • 50 km covers a metropolitan area
  • 100 km often includes several neighbouring cities
  • 500 km can include entire regions or countries

Comparing different locations can reveal how concentrated or dispersed human populations are around the world.

How this map works

Each cell covers 0.25° of latitude and longitude (≈ 28 km at the equator). Its colour reflects the population density in inhabitants per km², on a logarithmic scale: the visual jump from 1 to 10 is the same as from 10 to 100, or from 100 to 1 000.

The radius calculation sums the population of every cell whose centre falls within the chosen distance. Each cell's contribution is weighted by its area in km², capped at the circle area for radii smaller than one cell.

Data: WorldPop 2020 global 1 km unconstrained mosaic (ppp_2020_1km_Aggregated), aggregated to a 1 440 × 720 grid at 0.25° resolution. Source 1 km pixels are summed per output cell and divided by the cell area in km². All data is stored locally; no external request is made at runtime.
